U Sports Soccer: Week 8 rankings

This week of soccer brought a lot of excitement and disappointment. This week also had the more changes in the top 10 than any other week this season..

The biggest news of the week was when the Ryerson University Rams defeated the Carleton University Ravens. Now this headline may not sound like much but with this defeat, it marks the end of Carleton’s perfect record. With the defeat to the Rams, the Ravens fell from the second spot to the fourth spot in the rankings. Ryerson beat Carleton 3-1 in Toronto with big help from the new athlete of the week, Kyle Laborde-Ayres, who scored two goals in the big win. The Ravens played the next day at Varsity Stadium against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Carleton went back to their winning ways as they beat the Varsity Blues by a score of 3-1.

As the Ravens descended, the Carabins de l’Université de Montréal and the York University Lions moved up to their new respective positions. The Carabins sit in the second spot after playing only one game against the Université du Québec à Montréal Citadins. The Carabins were able to get a 1-0 victory at home against the Citadins. Unlike the Carabins, the York Lions had two games this week but like the Université de Montréal they went undefeated. York’s first game was against the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks, the Lions defeated them easily 3-0. York’s second game against Algoma University Thunderbirds was even easier as they steamed rolled them and put up ten goals to the Thunderbirds zero. With these two wins, York University was able to move up one spot into third.

Now that we’ve gone over the top four of the rankings, it’s time to move onto the bottom four. The biggest movement in the bottom four definitely goes to the Varsity Blues of Toronto as they fell out of the top 10 for the first time this year. The Varsity Blues played twice, their first game was against the Royal Military College of Canada Paladins and beat them soundly by a large margin of 6-0. The next game was against Carleton and as mentioned before they lost 3-1. Université de Québec à Trois Rivières Patriotes moved up into seventh from the eighth spot after a big week. St. Francis Xavier University X-Men lost their only game this week 3-1 to the Cape Breton University Capers, but even after suffering the loss, the X-Men moved out of the not ranked column and into the eighth spot. The last move in the rankings happened to the University of Guelph Gryphons who fell from the seventh spot and into the ninth after a tight loss of 4-3 to the Brock University Badgers.
