U Sports Basketball (W): RSEQ Semi-Finals preview

The RSEQ Semi-Finals are set to go tonight as the overall number one-seed and defending conference champions, Laval Rouge et Or will be hosting, the McGill Martlets in Quebec City. The other semi- finals feature the surprising second- seed, Bishop’s Gaiters hosting University of Quebec du Montreal (UQAM) Citadins. The two- semi finals games should be exciting to watch especially UQAM vs. Bishop’s.

RSEQ Semi-Finals –

#1 Rouge et Or vs. #4 McGill Martlets:

The Rouge et Or enter the postseason as the top seed in the conference and are the defending RSEQ champions . They finished the regular season with a record of 12-4 and are ridding a four-game winning streak which includes sweeping the Bishop’s Gaiters two weeks ago. McGill enter the postseason as the fourth- seed after ending regular season with an 7-9 record. The two teams played against each other three times this season with Laval winning two games .

The Rouge et Or finish third in scoring in the conference averaging 61.2 points a game,979 points. They averaged 41.4 offensive rebounds a game. They were second in the conference in three-point shooting as they made 109/388 3-PT made. Lastly, they led the conference in assists with 217 during the season.

The Martlets were dead last in scoring as they averaged 54.4 points per a game and 871 points in 16 games. They averaged 37.6 offensive rebounds a game,602 rebounds. They were fourth in 3-PT making 88 this year.

Laval held opponents to 57.8 points/ game, 925 points during the season, first in conference. They held team to shot .310 which was first in the conference. They were second in defensive rebounds with 544 rebounds. They were last in turnovers averaging 11.9 per a game, 190 turnovers including 86 steals. The Martlets held opponents to 58.8 points/ game ,941 points which was second in the conference. They limited opponents to shot .343 which was also second in the conference. Lastly, they averaged 17. 9 turnovers per a game, 286 turnovers during the season including 123 steals which was fourth in the conference.

The key players for both teams are the following, the defending champions are led by the RSEQ defensive player of the year and first- team RSEQ all- star, second- year winger, Khaleann Caron-Goudreau. Goudreau averaged 11.2 points a game,145 points all-together. She led the conference in rebounding averaging 10.8 rebounds per a game,141 rebounds including 100 defensive rebounds. She also led the conference in blocks with 20. Lastly, she led the conference in FG% with .529 connecting on 63 of her 119 shots.

McGill are led by fourth-year forward and first-team RSEQ all- star,Nadege Pluviose. She averaged 10.9 points/ game,164 points. She also averaged 6.5
rebounds a game, 97 rebounds.

#2 Bishop’s Gaiters vs. #3 UQAM Citadins:

The Gaiters were one of the many surprises in Canada this past season as they went from two wins last year to ten wins this year. It was the first time since 2008-2009 RSEQ season that they finished second in conference with the exact same record of 10-6. The Gaiters that year ended up losing to UQAM Citadins, 60-44. UQAM Citadins enter the postseason with a record of 7-9 which is also improve from last year when they only won three games. The Gaiters and Citadins played three- times this season which saw the Gaiters win two games.

The Gaiters averaged 67.4 points a game,1079 points during the regular season which led the conference. They also were first in field goal % of .353 making 375 of 1062 attempts. They also average 37.3 rebounds per a game,597 rebounds during the year. They were first in 3-PT made with 120.

The Citadins average 64.4 points/ game,1031 points which was second in the conference. They were second in field goal percentage of .353 making 358 of 1015 attempts. They averaged 35.6 rebounds per a games and 570 rebounds which was fourth
during the regular season.

The Gaiters limited opponents to just 62.6 points/game, 1002 points which was third in the conference. The Gaiters held its opponents to .367 in field goal percentage which was last in the conference. They averaged 13.8 turnovers a game,221 turnovers on the season. The Citadins held opponents to 63.6 points/game,1011 points which was fourth in conference. They limited opponents to shot .346 which was third in conference. They averaged 17.1 turnovers a game , 273 turnovers which was second in conference.

The key players for both teams are the following; Gaiters are led by RSEQ player of the year, sophomore guard Amaiquen Siciliano. Siciliano led the conference in scoring averaging 21.5 points per a game and 344 points. She also had 42 threes. Lastly, she had 66 assists and was first in steals with 35. Her teammate, freshman guard, Jael Kabunda was named RSEQ rookie of the year and was first- team all- conference after averaging 14.9 points/ game,239 points. She averaged 10.3 rebounds per a game and 165 rebounds.

The UQAM Citadins are led by fourth-year and first- team RSEQ all- star, meneure Clara Blachier. She averaged 12.8 points per a game and 204 points. She led the conference in assists with 88. She was first in 3-PT goal percentage with . 352 making 32 out of 91 attempts.
