BREAKING: RSEQ could resume in September

Toronto, ON– The RSEQ and its members in elementary, high school, college and university have elected to bring back sports as early as Sept 14. Their decision re-iterates Quebec Premier Francois Legault’s announcement, which allows for the resumption of athletic and extracurricular activities by mid-September.

A revised schedule will be released in the coming weeks, with hopes of beginning the season by mid-September. All sports will be adapted to follow the COVID-19 precautions set by provincial and local health authorities.

Some teams have resumed training, but up until now were preparing for a season yet to be determined. The RSEQ was the only university sports conference not to cancel their fall season, while the OUA, Canada West and AUS all slashed fall competition on June 8.

The RSEQ’s released spoke of the importance of school sports, saying and “School sport is an integral part of the DNA of educational success for Quebec’s youth.”

Some programs and athletes have expressed their concerns about the season, and there is the possibility that some may opt not to play if athletes and directors are uncomfortable with the final decision.

The RSEQ has yet to release further details, other than sport could return as soon as Sept. 14.
