Jonathan Sénécal takes Hec Crighton to headine U SPORTS football awards

Kingston, ON – Whether or not they win the Vanier Cup against UBC on Saturday afternoon, at least a few members of the Montréal Carabins will leave Kingston with some hardware.

The headliner, of course, was quarterback Jonathan Sénécal, who became the first Carabin to win the Hec Crighton Trophy as Most Outstanding Player in U SPORTS football. Sénécal had a season to remember for the Carabins as he finished with 15 touchdown passes, a new program record, and 2215 yards, the second-all-time in Carabins history. The quarterback’s 394 rushing yards also finished fourth in all of RSEQ and set a new Carabins single season record.

Sénecal was not the only Carabin to win some hardware as Harold Miessan earned the President’s Trophy as Standup Defensive Player of the Year. Miessan was a pillar of the Carabins’ defence in 2023 with 36 tackles and a pair of interceptions and became the second straight Carabin to win the award after Nicky Farinaccio a season ago.

Other awards on the night included an opponent of the Carabins in UBC’s Theo Benedet picking up the J.P. Metras Trophy as Lineman of the Year meanwhile Justin Cloutier of the Laval Rouge et Or earned the Peter Gorman Trophy as Rookie of the Year.

For the Frank Tindall Trophy for Coach of the Year, that honour went to Chris Morris of the University of Alberta Golden Bears after guiding Alberta to a 6-2 record and their first winning season since 2005.

All that remains for 2023 is the Vanier Cup between the Montréal Carabins and the UBC Thunderbirds. Kickoff from Richardson Memorial Stadium in Kingston goes live on CBC Sports digital platforms at 1pm here.
