U Sports WHKY: Dinos sweep Pronghorns to secure first round bye

It also marks the first time since 2016 that the Dinos have clinched the playoffs

Calgary, Alta- It was a weekend to remember for the University of Calgary Dinos women’s hockey team who swept the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns to earn a much deserved bye week.

The Dinos outscored the Pronghorns 7-2 while Goaltender Kelsey Roberts made 33 saves during the sweep. Team leader in points Elizabeth Lang also had a goal while Trechelle Bunn and Sara Craven picked up a pair of points.

It was also senior send off weekend with six Pronghorn and three Dinos playing their final home and home match of the season. That included graduating forward Chelsea Court who was one of three freshman players that played in the last playoff run for the Dinos back in 2016, and she believes this was one of their best seasons yet.

“Everyone came back in really good shape and we were ready to go. Super excited to get the bye.”

While a bye week was worth celebrating, the Dinos are without two key members of their team. Graduating forward and defender Delaney Frey & Paige Michalenko were sidelined from last weeks Crowchild Classic and the rematch due to shoulder injuries they sustained while playing the Alberta Pandas back late January. But with or without Frey or Michalenko, Court believes they still got it.

“We didn’t make it passed quarters (in 2016) but we’re ready. We have to keep playing the way we know how to play and not change anything at all.”

DINOS TO WATCH:

G Kelsey Roberts (fresh off a third straight first-star performance at the Crowchild Classic and picking up two wins afterwards, second in SV% in Canada West)

F Elizabeth Lang (back to leading the Dinos in PTS with teammate Sara Craven)

The Dinos wrap up their season with an 18-7 record, their best since 2012-2013. They’ll face the higher quarter-final winner in the second round. Game 1 of the series goes Febuary 21st at Father David Bauer Arena and you can stream all playoff games on CanadaWest.Tv
