Toronto, ON – It wasn’t gold, but for the first time in the history of Ryerson Rams hockey, medals were handed out at Mattamy Athletic Centre.
The Ryerson Rams defeated the McGill Redbirds 2-1 to win the OUA Bronze Medal and subsequently earn a trip to the 2022 U SPORTS Men’s Hockey National Championship at Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
Jeremiah Addison got the scoring going for the Rams, taking a pass from Zach Shankar and burying it behind Emanuel Vella midway through the first to give the Rams a 1-0 lead that remained until the end of the first.
The Redbirds, who were shut out in their OUA East Semifinal 1-0 against the UQTR Patriotes, threw everything at Garrett Forrest in the second period but were unable to solve the Rams goalie.
Late in the second, on a four-minute power-play, after Hayden McCool was high-sticked, Kevin Gursoy sent a laser into the back of the net to give the Rams the 2-0 lead.
It was more of the same in the final frame. The McGill Redbirds tried to find a goal but could not get anything past Garrett Forrest until Brandon Frattaroli buried one with less than two minutes to go, but that’s the only one they would get.
The Rams pick up the first medals in their program history with the win. The Rams move on to play in the 2022 U SPORTS MHKY National Championship that starts on Thursday.
